Today when we think of intelligence within the Classical World, one figure comes to mind: the Greek Goddess Athena. In seconds, Athena could turn from a gentle and scholarly figure into one of glorious fury. In Homer’s Iliad, Athena, as a war goddess, inspired and fought alongside the Greek heroes, and her aid was synonymous with military prowess. This prowess among great figures inspired her followers to wage war on the grounds of righteousness, and would do so on such a scale that their might eventually matched that of the Spartans, though they were all gentle at heart.
Because of her practical reasoning and intellectual thought, ( represented by the owl in Greek culture), Athena found a wide cult following within the people of Athens.
